The Red Sea MAX REEF-SPEC\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0performance criteria is the result of Red Sea\u2019s years of research into the sustainable growth of all corals, including the most delicate \u201cSPS\u201d corals, in an artificial reef environment.<\/p>\n

This knowledge, gained over 25 years, forms the basis for the specification of all Red Sea MAX aquarium systems designs.

REEF-SPEC\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0Lighting<\/h4>\n
\n

Light is the primary energy source in all coral reef\u00a0ecosystems, as it is utilized by photosynthetic organisms\u00a0that provide up to 85% of the nutrition for most corals.\u00a0The important parameters for light are the intensity and\u00a0the spectrum or more specifically the PAR (photosynthetic\u00a0active radiation).<\/p>\n

Light intensity of 1 watt per liter (4 watts per gal) of water\u00a0is ideal for all reef inhabitants especially when provided by\u00a0high intensity T5 fluorescent tubes that can be positioned\u00a0close to the water surface, providing a strong and even\u00a0light throughout the entire aquarium.<\/p>\n

REEF-SPEC\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0Filtration<\/h4>\n
Keeping the reef\u2019s delicate creatures in a closed system\u00a0requires special attention to water quality, by maintaining\u00a0parameters within the narrow range that supports life.\u00a0Effective filtration systems are made up of a number of\u00a0elements, each performing complimentary tasks.<\/div>\n

The heart of the Red Sea Max filtration is the protein\u00a0skimmer which removes the vast majority of the wastes\u00a0produced by the aquarium inhabitants, as well as\u00a0thoroughly oxygenating the water. Reef-Spec skimmers\u00a0supplied within the Max will turn the aquarium water\u00a0volume 3 times per hour and have a water:air ratio of 3:1.<\/div>\n

This skimmer specification sets Max filtration apart from\u00a0other systems, and is necessary in order to provide the\u00a0water quality required by delicate SPS corals.<\/div>\n

REEF-SPEC\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0Circulation<\/h4>\n
Sufficient water movement is crucial for the well being of\u00a0static coral reef species and helps maintain proper water\u00a0quality parameters. Water flow provides the corals with the\u00a0nutrients and minerals (e.g. calcium) necessary for growth\u00a0as well as flushing away mucus and preventing stagnant\u00a0areas where decomposing organic matter would otherwise accumulate.<\/div>\n

Turbulence of the water surface is necessary to prevent the\u00a0accumulation of a bio-film that reduces light penetration\u00a0and efficient gas exchange.<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Most corals that are suitable for reef aquariums come from\u00a0shallow water with calm to moderate currents. A turnover\u00a0of the total water volume of 10-15 times per hour is ideal,\u00a0and every Max is supplied with the necessary pumps\u00a0included, all housed discreetly within the design ensuring\u00a0the beauty of the aquarium is not compromised.<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
