However, solutions of different type of salts have different refractive indexes.<\/p>\n<p>Brine is a solution of Sodium Chloride (table salt) that contains 2 chemical elements.<\/p>\n<p>Seawater contains approximately 70 chemical elements that include Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium etc. in addition to the Sodium Chloride.<\/p>\n<p>Seawater and Brine of the same salinity (i.e. the same weight of salt\/liter) have different refractive\u00a0indexes and will give different salinity readings if measured on the same refractometer.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 class=\"title18 title16\">Refraction\u00a0&amp; refractive index<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>All transparent materials such as liquids refract (distort) light.<\/p>\n<p>All transparent materials refract light differently and have what is called a \u201crefractive index\u201d which means how much a particular material distorts light.<\/p>\n<p>Different concentrations of the same liquid have different refractive indexes.<\/p>\n<p>The scale of a refractometer is calculated by using a mathematical algorithm that relates the measured refraction to its concentration for a specific liquid.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/g1.redseafish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Refraction.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5362\" src=\"https:\/\/g1.redseafish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Refraction.jpg\" alt=\"Refraction\" width=\"738\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"title18 title16\">Refractive index and temperature<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The refractive index of liquids change with temperature and therefore has a major effect on measuring salinity with a refractometer.<\/p>\n<p>The algorithm for defining the PPT (and S.G.) scale for a refractometer is calculated for a specific temperature.<\/p>\n<p>PPT readings from refractometers that are not calibrated for reef aquariums (i.e. 25<b><sup>o<\/sup><\/b>C) need to be adjusted according to a conversion table to give the actual PPT at the aquarium temperature. This is often a cause for misinterpretation of refractometer readings.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">For example<\/span>, using a seawater refractometer calibrated at 20<b><sup>o<\/sup><\/b>C will give a PPT reading that is approximately 1-1.5ppt lower than the absolute salinity of the same water sample at the normal aquarium temperature of 25<b><sup>o<\/sup><\/b>C.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"title16\"><strong>Therefore, Red Sea\u2019s Seawater Refractometer calibrated at 25<sup>\u00b0<\/sup>C\/77<sup> 0<\/sup>F directly reads the absolute salinity of seawater with no need for temperature compensation factor)<\/strong><b><\/b><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"title16\">\u00a0ATC &#8211; Automatic temperature compensation<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Temperature is probably the biggest cause of wrong readings with a refractometer. Calibration and testing of water samples should be done after the refractometer and water sample have equalized at the correct temperature.<\/p>\n<p>Automatic temperature compensation (ATC) compensates for a few degrees of difference between the ambient temperature and the calibrated temperature of the refractometer.
